What types of FM content to Young Professionals seek?

    Hello Everyone,
The team at IFMA HQ is trying to develop a better idea of the type of FM content and built environment topics Young FM Professionals are interested in. Can you tell us what kind of challenges are you facing right now that IFMA or fellow FMs might be able to help with? What sorts of resources would you like to see from IFMA in the future?

Thank you in advance for sharing your input and helping us understand your needs.

    Hello Madeline,

    Thank you for addressing this.

As a young professional member, am seeking to learn the latest and efficient FM techniques along with the guidance to implement it over the conventional old techniques.

As we are in initial stage of the career, we need more "how to" kind of guidance. For Ex. In my case i need to develop Policy and Procedure for a new FM Company. Although I've some basic ideas of the input required, it would be very useful if checklist kind of document supplying firm and definite information on the topic.

Also please provide me with point of contact from IFMA who address the queries and guide, as i see many questions in open forums are not answered for many days (including this post).

I hope to get the requested guidance from IFMA

    Thanks,

    Taufiq,

Thank you for sharing your input. I will include it in my conversations with IFMA staff and volunteers. You mentioned that you are looking for a policy and procedure checklist. I'm investigating to see if IFMA has that kind of checklist and will follow up with findings.

However, IFMA makes vetted content available on the Knowledge Library, including some templates, checklists, and webinars, in addition to more traditional articles and white papers. I've heard from other FMs that the Knowledge Library is a great place to start your search for FM information and resources. You can access te Knowledge Library here: http://community.ifma.org/knowledge_library

Thank you again for sharing your input.

    Madeline,

The things I am constantly looking for are training material to bring up my staff and leadership material for myself. As a passionate young FM I find it hard to find tools to keep staff motivated and allow them to gain experience without having to jump from company to company. It is hard to empower staff to learn something that they are not going to use right now, but will need to know to have a future as their career develops. If you could help create more resources for us to use, to better our leadership and empower our employees, and help illuminate the wacky career paths of FMs it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I love the local chapters we have.

I feel as new members it’s hard to feel like you can come in and connect right away and feel apart of the community. I wonder for young professionals creating something like a closed local Facebook groups that is run by someone in the local chapter would be a huge ad on! Curious on what everyone’s thoughts are?

    Training courses and Certs.

Currently waiting to hear from local chapters regarding FE Study and CFM/FMP courses(pending), and am In search of a Six Sigma course. Discounted rates for IFMA member would be a nifty feature.

    Madeline,

I think one of the biggest needs I have found in my FM endeavor is content to help move my organization to move forward with sustainable practices. Another topic at least for me is on interviewing of potential hires and on-boarding procedures for maintenance staff. I would have enjoyed to find a how-to on conducting interviews and what type of questions are good to ask.

    - importance of capitalizing projects
    - change management
    - management of IFM

    Hello Madeline,

As a young and new member to IFMA and growing my career in this field, I am seeking to learn and apply efficient techniques to manage multi-location facilities such as chain retail stores - particularly for HVAC. I looked up HVAC in the knowledge library and while the information is very useful for what I found, I see great potential in growing this area of the knowledge library.

I look forward to you your response and have a great rest of your day

Hello, Keith. Thank you for sharing your feedback. That's good insight. I will share this with the folks who plan content for Knowledge Library, FMJ, webinars, etc. I know one of the reasons we lack specific types of content, such as HVAC and FM in chain retail situations, is that we don't know any of the experts in these fields, yet. If you know of any or if you have special expertise to share, IFMA encourages contribution. I'll include a link below in case. In the meantime, we will work with the network we have to see what can be accomplished. Thanks again!

    Challenges:
    • Budget constraints
    • Being the first devoted facilities person for a building (especially older or poorly maintained buildings)
    • Being a younger woman working with predominantly vendors who are men (being taken seriously)
    • Knowing how to prioritize projects
    • Building a maintenance calendar from scratch
    • Competing priorities and safety issues

    Resources I'd like to see:
    • Templates
    • Webinars geared to YP
    • Expert Panels open for questions
    Thanks for asking!

Sarah, thank you for sharing these topic ideas. Also, I love a good bulleted list.

Can you (or anyone reading this) tell me more about the kinds of templates you'd like to see? I know we have some on the IFMA Knowledge Library and they are popular pieces. I'm digging deeper to learn more about what FMs are seeking out.

You're right! There are already some helpful templates in the library but roughly a third of them I cannot access from the premium level. I wish the whole knowledge library was available to all IFMA members regardless of level.

    I could use templates for
    • a PM Schedule/Calendar that can be used in place of a formal CMMS or to support the CMMS
    • Gantt chart and/or Project Management template
    • Evaluations (sent to company/staff) for end of year, end of project, etc.
    • Forms and spreadsheets often used (ex. parking permits, moving office furniture, workorders requests, etc.)
    • Proposals for c-suite for capital projects

I guess I'd recommend just pondering what systems, evaluations, procedures/plans, etc. would need to be put into place if nothing for FM existed at an organization. I was starting from nothing and have put in a lot of hours creating documents that already existed in the professional network somewhere (not the library). We don't need to recreate the wheel.

That's all I can think of right now.
