What Does Your Chapter Do?

What does your chapter/component do to support the GWI? Do you sponsor scholarships? Do you volunteer on a foundation committee? Perhaps you have a local college or university you are trying to get a Facility management program started at. Do you have a chairperson to help further our future of FM?

    Sound off!

    Carolyn,

Some years back, there was talk about creating a Foundation Liaison position on each chapter board.  As I understood it, the thought was to make it a dual-role with the VP so that it would remain a legacy position and always keep Foundation objectives front and center as a result.  At one of the chapters I am involved in, Sacramento Valley, we created this new position (held by yours truly) to inform and lobby the local chapter regarding Foundation initiatives and communication.  I think there is merit to this idea and I am not sure if it is still under consideration across the IFMA universe.

Perhaps we should also consider adding GWI related activities to chapter balanced score cards and making Foundation/GWI support a specific and heavily-weighted mandatory judging criteria for Chapter/Professional/Associate of the Year Awards of Excellence.

Lastly, what about asking each chapter that puts on a golf tournament to designate a single hole sponsorship for the Foundation?

Just some thoughts for now.  More to come.

All great stuff!  IFMA Foundation just launched a new GWI Chapter Partner Program (see playbook in the downloads section) to help chapters better support the goal of making FM a Career of Choice in their local areas!  I'm excited to bring this to our upcoming planning retreat to see how this could tie in to our chapter goals moving forward.

Thanks Carolyn!  The Foundation is very proud to have released this new program last week at Facility Fusion in Chicago.

This is great opportunity to let all chapters know that weren't able to attend Facility Fusion or the Foundation sessions there that we'll have webinars on the new partner program and Foundation staff will ALWAYS make themselves available to dial into any chapter board or committee meeting to talk about the new program and the support available from the Foundation.  Staff or Foundation Trustees will even join your local team!

Thanks Wayne - the Foundation DOES highly recommend a designated member of the chapter to formally be the local representative for Foundation / GWI activities.  It doesn't have to be assigned to a specific title within a chapter - the idea situation is where the person is passionate about making FM a Career of Choice and the chapter board formally recognized that person as such, welcomes them to board meetings, providing monthly updates at chapter meetings, etc.  Some chapters have chosen to add a board seat specifically for the Foundation liaison.  Foundation staff will always assist chapters in integrating GWI activities into chapter strategic and tactical plans.  Just contact any Foundation staff anytime!

    Carolyn:

At the Capital Chapter, we do a number of things and as the upcoming President, this is one of my big initiatives that I want to be promoting. Professional development has always been a big part of what I do and how I like to help, and helping fill the FM Pipeline is so much a part of that.  We have several scholarships that we offer to help to pay for FMP/SFP/CFM classes.  We also have a scholarship to help pay tuition for FM-related fields or in FM Programs.

We are also working towards bringing Facilithon to Virginia and are scheduled to run the first competition at the Regional event this coming April.  So we're very excited to getting High School Students to learn more about the world of FM.  We've also been in discussions with the IFMA Foundation and a local County about FM-related internship programs, but that is all still in it's infancy as we have some limitations on the boundaries the program sets and where our membership is.

We've got a number of other things we've been talking about (including how we can help local Community Colleges and Universities get an FM Program up and running) and ideas that I'm still noodling for the coming year.

Looking forward to seeing what others are doing so that we may learn on what is working and what may not be working.

The Capital Chapter is indeed doing a lot to make a difference in the region!  The IFMA Foundation looks forward to continuing to work closely with the chapter to pull all of these initiatives and other to establish a comprehensive plan and approach to FM workforce development.

This is a great example of starting with opportunities that are right there right now and building upon those initial efforts.  Getting 2-year and 4-year program in the area is definitely needed and the Foundation will continue to assist with this and anything else we can!

Thanks for all you do Capital Chapter!

Professional development and education has always been the cornerstone of the San Fernando Valley Chapter in Southern California.  Our tag line of Learn Connect Advance speaks directly to our mission and goals which is to promote knowledge sharing and to support, sustain, and develop our membership through education and program opportunities. We not only promote this within our Chapter but have donated funds and time to IFMA and the Foundation to support scholarships and the GWI initiative for many years.

As part of the San Fernando Valley Chapter in Southern California I have been very engaged with GWI for several years and shared my aspirations with my Chapter including helping to establish and bring the FM essentials curriculum at Chaffey College in 2017.

I am very excited to see what others Chapters are doing around the country.
